BIG GAMES: Shepherd College, Episode 1
It seems that every Golden Eagle team had its big game. To list a few, the '72 squad had its 10-7 win over Shippensburgh PA, the '71 squad beat Grove City, the '69 team hung in tough against IUP, and the '67 crew beat Cortland.
Our older brothers have another big game in mind. The 1965 Golden Eagle team traveled to Shepherdstown in the northeastern back woods of West Virginia to take on well-regarded Shepherd College and came away with a 19-0 win.
We are happy to have a small collection of their memories of that game. Here's the first one in a series.
"I'd like to send you a recollection of the entire game but the only thing I remember is a GOAT.......from what my teammates tell me, #1 Shepherd's mascot is a ram with big curled horns...#2 I thought that I had a head-on collision with that damn GOAT but again my teammates tell me that after I dropped their left halfback coming around my right end position, the halfback got up and kicked me in the head as I was getting up. I was OUT cold. They kicked the halfback out of the game and carried me off the field....and #3 is the worst part of the entire game......I was left behind for (3) days in the hospital with "Lefty" McIntyre. Oh yeah!........that was the WIN to remember.....damn goat!"
