1972 Game Action vs Cortland

Half a century ago we endured triple sessions in the August heat, pounded each other on a daily basis, and battled rugged competition weekly, all in spartan conditions. We bled green and gold.

And we had fun together, too.

Half a century later we have our memories and we have each other. We no longer flash the green and gold like we did in the day. Ours is the color that comes with age, experience, and some wisdom.

We are The Gray Eagles. Our stories are preserved here.

Tommy Wiedl and brother Paul Wiedl were the last of the straight on kickers. When we got close to field goal range, or a TD looked likely, Tommy had a ritual I witnessed many times. He carried a shoelace with him. His cleats, high tops, were flat at the toe on his kicking foot and he would have one of us, Bobby Nugent or I, push forward on that toe ( towards him ) so it was pointing up, Tom would them sling that shoelace around the first cleat on the bottom of the shoe, holding it taught and tying it behind at the ankle. I watched him practice and practice this style of kicking. He was sure of himself, always looking down when the ball was kicked. My job was to protect that foot, the last blocker before the holder ( mostly Bobby Nugent ) and Tom. Tom played defensive end with all his heart. Who now-a-days has their place kicker playing on the field?
